The longtime Publix on Southern Boulevard in West Palm Beach now has an official closing date.
The Publix at Southdale Shopping Center, 828 Southern Blvd., will close Saturday, September 26 at 7 p.m. as the company prepares to demolish and replace the longtime grocery store with a new Publix on the same site.
Publix has not announced when the new store will open.
Publix Confirms a New Store Is Coming
The closure had been expected, but Publix has now confirmed that the Southern Boulevard location is shutting down specifically to build a new store on the property.
The redevelopment has been in the works for years. In 2021, the owner of Southdale Shopping Center filed plans to replace the existing 45,675-square-foot Publix with a new store roughly 10,000 square feet larger.
It is not yet clear whether those plans represent the final design for the upcoming store.
One of West Palm Beach’s Oldest Publix Stores
The Southern Boulevard Publix has been part of the area for decades. It was one of five Publix stores that opened in Palm Beach County in 1959 and was later renovated and expanded.
The store is also one of the remaining Publix locations with large hand-painted tile murals at its entrances.
For SoSo and surrounding neighborhoods, the closure will temporarily remove one of the area’s primary grocery stores while the new Publix is built.
