West Palm Beach is considering a temporary pause on redevelopment along part of its southern waterfront, which is becoming a coveted spot for developers looking to raise new high-rise condos and apartments.
City commissioners have given initial approval to a six-month freeze on new rezoning applications for several properties along South Flagler Drive and Washington Road, stretching from Monroe Drive to Southern Boulevard. The ordinance still requires a final City Commission vote on July 20, 2026 before taking effect.
The proposed pause would only affect new redevelopment proposals that require rezoning. Projects already in the approval process would not be impacted.
The goal is to give the city time to hire an outside consultant to review the area’s zoning and recommend any updates before additional luxury redevelopment moves forward.
The proposal comes as residents continue to voice concerns about the pace of development, traffic, infrastructure, and preserving the character of West Palm Beach’s waterfront neighborhoods.
