A New Vision for Woodlawn Cemetery in West Palm Beach

One of West Palm Beach’s most historic spaces could soon take on a whole new life.

Woodlawn Cemetery, originally created in 1904 by Henry Flagler, is in the early stages of being reimagined as a park-like destination that blends history, nature, and community. The 17-acre site, located near the Norton Museum, was originally designed as a peaceful place not just for remembrance, but for people to walk, gather, and enjoy the outdoors.

Now, a group called Friends of Woodlawn is working to bring that vision back.

Plans include restoring the tree canopy, adding walking paths, enhancing gardens, and introducing sculptures and gathering spaces throughout the property. At the center of the concept is a new trellis structure that could host small events like live music, art installations, and poetry readings.

The goal is to create a “living park” or a space that honors those laid to rest while also giving the community a quiet, beautiful place to spend time.

If approved, the transformation would add a unique cultural green space to West Palm Beach and further connect the area’s growing arts district.
