West Palm Beach Bike Master Plan Update: A Path to Safer, More Connected Biking

As West Palm Beach grows, so does the need for better transportation options. With more people moving in, traffic congestion is expected to increase. That’s why the City is updating its Bike Master Plan—to make biking a safer, more convenient, and enjoyable transportation choice. The goal is to close the gap with other cities that have already made strides in this area.

The updated plan starts with engaging the community through surveys and neighborhood meetings. This outreach will help gather input on current bike needs and priorities, ensuring the future bike network reflects the diverse needs of West Palm Beach residents. If you live or work in the City, consider participating and providing your feedback through this survey or attending one of the five neighborhood meetings listed here (and ending on February 13, 2025).

Currently, only a small percentage of trips in West Palm Beach are made by bike, and bike accidents have been on the rise (a 75% rise from 2020 to 2023). Of the City’s streets, 32% are deemed to be “high stress” and these “high-stress” streets are situated in a way that break up neighborhoods. This has the effect of discouraging bike transportation, as bikers feel less safe riding or crossing busy roads with high or fast-moving traffic.

To address these issues, the new plan prioritizes safety, connectivity, and accessibility—especially for vulnerable users like children and seniors. By expanding low-stress bike routes and connecting neighborhoods, the City aims to reduce accidents and encourage more biking for everyday trips.

The City’s vision is to create a bike network that is not only safer but also more enjoyable, offering a fun and efficient alternative to driving. As seen in other cities, increasing bike trips can reduce congestion, improve air quality, and provide a cost-effective transportation option.

With the input from local residents and a focus on infrastructure improvements, the updated Bike Master Plan is an essential step toward a more sustainable, bike-friendly West Palm Beach. Whether for commuting, recreation, or daily errands, biking will be a key part of the city’s transportation future.
