Palm Beach County’s Tourism Future: 10 Big Ideas Driving a Billion-Dollar Vision

Palm Beach County is entering a new era of tourism to be one that goes far beyond beaches and seasonal visitors. Backed by a 20-year Tourism Master Plan that is in process, local leaders are laying the groundwork for a more dynamic, year-round destination built around culture, sports, wellness, and immersive experiences.

But this isn’t just a vision on paper. County officials have already begun moving forward, approving funding to study all major projects and signaling serious momentum behind what could become one of the most ambitious tourism transformations in Florida.

A Shift From Volume to Value

At its core, the plan represents a major shift in strategy. Rather than focusing on attracting more visitors, Palm Beach County is prioritizing higher-quality tourism, meaning longer stays, higher spending, and more meaningful experiences.

The goal is to create a destination that blends arts, culture, nature, sports, and innovation into a unified experience while improving quality of life for residents and preserving the region’s identity. With about 11 million visitors already coming to the county annually, the strategy is about scaling success.

The 10 Big Ideas Shaping the Future

To bring this vision to life, the plan outlines ten potential transformative projects designed to redefine the region’s tourism economy.

1. A State-of-the-Art Indoor Sports Complex

A large, climate-controlled facility would host national and international youth tournaments year-round, tapping into one of the fastest-growing segments in tourism. County officials also proposed a potential indoor shooting sports complex.

2. Expansion of the Convention Center District

Plans include expanding the convention center and transforming the surrounding area into a walkable hub connected to CityPlace, the Kravis Center, and downtown.

3. Hosting Global Mega-Events

By partnering with Miami-Dade and Broward Counties, Palm Beach County aims to support major international events like the World Cup or Olympics, serving as a hub for training, lodging, and overflow activity.

4. A Flagship Immersive Experience Venue

Inspired by cutting-edge attractions like the Las Vegas Sphere, this would be a high-tech entertainment venue featuring digital art, immersive storytelling, and year-round programming.

5. A Signature Destination in the Glades

A landmark cultural or architectural attraction would bring attention and investment to inland communities, highlighting the region’s agricultural and cultural identity.

6. A World-Class Wellness Destination

A large-scale wellness resort (e.g., with thermal pools, fitness, spa experiences, and health-focused programming) would position the county as a leader in the fast-growing wellness tourism market.

7. Global Waterfront Events

The county’s coastline would host large-scale international events (e.g., regattas, festivals, concerts, and culinary showcases).

8. An Iconic Landmark

A globally recognizable structure (similar to Chicago’s Bean or the Eiffel Tower in Paris) would create a defining visual identity and attract visitors from around the world.

9. A Major Sports and Entertainment Arena

A new arena would host concerts, professional sports, and large-scale events that potentially fill a major gap in the county’s infrastructure. Some proposals are already gaining traction. The planned arena, for example, could potentially attract a professional flag football franchise, a rapidly growing, mixed-gender sport that will debut in the 2028 Olympics.

10. A World-Class Racetrack

Reviving motorsports in the county could bring major events like NASCAR or Formula 1, along with year-round driving experiences and festivals.

Momentum Is Already Building

County commissioners recently approved funding to study all ten projects, rather than narrowing the list, committing roughly $1 million from tourism tax revenues to evaluate feasibility, locations, and demand. The feasibility study is expected to be presented later this year.

At the same time, officials have acknowledged challenges ahead. Many of these projects will rely on public-private partnerships, raising questions about funding, execution, and ensuring long-term public benefit.

More Than Tourism

While the plan is centered on attracting visitors, its broader goal is economic and community impact. These projects are designed to:

  • Create jobs and support local businesses
  • Revitalize underdeveloped areas
  • Expand cultural and recreational opportunities
  • Improve infrastructure and public spaces

Just as importantly, the plan emphasizes sustainability and responsible growth to ensure that development protects natural resources and reflects the identity of all 39 municipalities across the county.

The Bottom Line

Palm Beach County is no longer positioning itself as just a beach destination. It’s aiming to become a globally competitive, experience-driven market and one that blends lifestyle, culture, and innovation into a year-round tourism engine.

If even a handful of these ideas become reality, the region could see a transformation that reshapes not only its tourism industry, but its identity for decades to come.
