Description

The Palm Beach Lake Trail is a scenic 5.5-mile path along the western edge of Palm Beach, offering stunning views of the intercoastal waterway (also known as the Lake Worth Lagoon) and downtown West Palm Beach. The path starts near the western edge of Worth Avenue by the marinas and ends just north of the Sailfish Club (an exclusive members-only club on the north side of the island). The trail features a wide, paved path that allows walkers and bikers to experience the beauty of Palm Beach, as the path weaves between the water and incredible residential homes (more like mansions) and through landmarks like the Society of the Four Arts, the Flagler Museum, and The Royal Poinciana Plaza. You can even expand your walk or bike ride by starting near the Atlantic Ocean on the eastern edge of Worth Avenue, or by ending at the Sea Isles Estates Pier Park on the north end of the island (where you can hunt for sea life, see Peanut Island, and watch the boats go in and out of the ocean).

PBN Review

We highly recommend grabbing a beach cruiser bike and hitting the Palm Beach Lake Trail! A bike is the easiest way around if you want to do a "full loop" (starting at Worth Avenue, then heading north to Sea Isles Estates Pier Park, then heading south back to Worth Avenue with a stop along the ocean if you are up for it). You can also opt for a shorter ride or use your legs and walk the trail. Every option is just as lovely.

If you are up for the "full loop," we would recommend starting early in the morning (to be the heat). If you are like us, we start in downtown West Palm Beach and head east over the Royal Palm Way bridge on our bikes, but there is also some parking available on the island. Once you are on the island, head north, where you will pass the gorgeous Flagler Museum. W like to make a pit stop in The Royal Poinciana Plaza for a smoothie at Celis Juice Bar. After continuing north and weaving around the Sailfish Club, we don't stop at the end of the trail. Rather, if you continue to head north through the residential neighborhood, you can find the Sea Isles Estates Pier Park (open from 6:00 am to 9:00 pm), which features a pier looking out at the waterway connecting the intercoastal to the Atlantic Ocean. It is the perfect place for a halfway pit stop (and only an additional 0.6 miles once the trail ends). We also typically sneak another pit stop at the beach before heading south toward Worth Avenue (as there are a few hidden public trails to the ocean that are just east of the Sea Isles Estates Pier Park). Then, you can either head back the way you came on the trail or weave throughout the residential streets. We have taken either route, as both head to our next preferred stop, which is lunch from Buccan's Sandwich Shop. We grab our gourmet sandwich and walk to the beach to eat by the water. By this time, we are usually ready to head back across the bridge to West Palm Beach (and complete the approximate 12-mile ride).

PBN Tip

Beware that there are two areas that the trail "seems to end" (after the Flagler Museum until the north side of Royal Poinciana, as well as around the Sailfish Club). The trail will pick up again if you weave around the buildings.

Make the extra effort and go all the way to the Sea Isles Estates Pier Park. Take a break on the pier before making the trek back and see what wildlife you can see.
