Why Palm Beach Turns Off the Lights at Night

If you’ve noticed the lights are off along Palm Beach at night, it’s to help protect baby sea turtles. From March 1 to October 31, oceanfront property owners are asked to turn off or shield their lights to prevent confusing hatchlings.

Artificial lights can lead them away from the ocean, disrupting their journey and contributing to the decline of sea turtle populations. Along with turning off lights, it’s also important to leave sea turtle nests alone. Disturbing them can interfere with their natural process. By turning off or redirecting lights and respecting the nests, Palm Beach is doing its part to ensure these little turtles make it safely to the sea.
