Tri-Rail Faces $30M Budget Shortfall, Service Cuts Possible

Tri-Rail – the commuter train connecting Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami-Dade counties – is facing a $30 million annual budget gap when federal COVID-19 relief funds run out in 2026. This budget gap is threatening service cuts and delayed expansions, including a new station in northern Palm Beach County.

Officials are asking Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami-Dade counties for additional funding ($10 million per year from each county), but tax hikes could be a tough sell. Without the funds, Tri-Rail may reduce service and pause projects.

With over 1.5 million riders in Palm Beach County, maintaining Tri-Rail is crucial to avoiding further traffic congestion. County officials will meet again on March 28, 2025 to discuss funding options.
